Wings Independent Fashion Festival Debut

by Thea Basiliou May 04, 2025

Sydney based, Wings Independent Fashion Festival make their debut this May offering a "mixed arts experience" in the independent runways genre.

Founded by Alvi Chung, creative director of Sydney brand Speed and her partner Daniel Neeson, Wings is about presenting an alternative fashion point of view, providing space for outsider brands with an independent platform, to freely showcase their ideas without inhibition.

This immersive experience has been successful in Melbourne recently with the popular Object Merchant event which includes performance, catwalk and market stalls.

Wings runs slightly ahead of the annual Australian Fashion Week, also in Sydney which begins on Monday May the 12th and which also feels like a start-up all over again with its new caretakers, The Australian Fashion Council.

All fashion industry eyes will also be on the new AFW as it takes a fresh approach to the event which had lost its way in recent years under the helm of IMG and we can't wait.

As the only Australian fashion week runway to sit on the international circuit, alongside New York, London, Milan and Paris, it is important that we get it right!

Designers showing in the Wings Independent Fashion Festival include -

Amiss

Catholic Guilt

Jody Just

Joteo

Speed

Wings will be held in the heritage listed Plaza Hotel, a 1930s art deco building in Sydney’s CBD which features marble interiors, gilded staircases and underground cinema vaults.

The festival runs over 2 days on Thursday May 8th and Friday May 9th.
