Michael Phillips' practice spans the built environment, book design, screen printing, painting
and sculpture.
His multi-disciplinary practice is informed by the arts and crafts movement and the Bauhaus
style of teaching he received when studying at QIT.
Both of these key artistic movements saw art, craft and design as integrally connected
and interchangeable disciplines.
These philosophies, as well as Phillips' ethos of 'making do', using discarded/rejected materials
and the subtle referencing of odd-ball and popular culture, underpin and connect his seemingly
disparate works.
The BV Editions are a response to the BV window and internal spaces…based on simple form
and colour combinations that have evolved from painting and constructing small buildings…
a process of paring back and simple fitting together of elements…something akin
to making a garment.
